THE RIVER is a collaboration with Greg Lago, a Clayton, New York, wood
engraver and Jim Benvenuto of Full Moon Press, a fine letterpress printing
house located in Potsdam, New York. The poem The Poachers was written
to accompany an existing Lago engraving of the same name. The engravings
Evening on the St. Lawrence and Evening Upriver were cut
for existing poems, and the engraving/poem set Ice was produced
in direct collaboration.

A
very limited edition (75 sets) of the broadsides was letterpress-printed
direct from the blocks and handset type onto archival paper by Jim Benvenuto.
A handful are still available (inquire via e-mail in the lower left frame).
Wood engraver Greg Lago,
shown in his Clayton, New York, workshop executing a somewhat ruder form
of his art than illustrating poetry. Another Lago/Hobson/Benvenuto collaboration
on this site is Officers' Mess
under poems of peace and war. Written and engraved during the Gulf War,
this broadside was accepted for a 1992 Gulf War art exhibit at New York's
Center for Book Arts. Poems to accompany two other Lago illustrations,
The Club Island Boatman and
Three-legged Dog, Two-lane Blacktop,
appear together for the first time under North Country poems.
